Once upon a time, someone built a super cute garden spot in this backyard. But we suspect that was a very long time ago.
This was the state of the garden in April... but we had high hopes for vegetables and flowers in this fun little spot. We dove right in, pretty sure that anything would be better than last year.
We bought a handy 'garden claw' as a thrift shop and tilled away. Only it wasn't nearly strong enough for this overgrowth, so we rented a small roto-tiller and finished the job.
We also mowed, edged, raked, pruned, shoveled, fertilized and watered. Whew... and that was before planting.
My friend Sheri loaned me her book, Square Foot Gardening. It seems like a great system, so we plotted out our garden squares with seeds and plants.
We planted: tomatoes, peppers, watermelon, pumpkin, dill, oregano, cilantro, onions, potatoes, carrots, lettuce, corn, beans, and lots of fun flowers!
Now, we are holding our breath for the next couple of weeks. Hopefully we'll be able to report about a great harvest. Either way, the garden is now a much lovelier spot and we are all learning. Alot.
