Tales from the Auction Block

When you are starting a farm, you need alot of stuff. To complicate the process, most of this stuff is not available in stores. So, most Saturday mornings Brent has been going to local auctions. Here are some of the treasures he has purchased...

Large metal tanks for chilling, old oil tanks that hold feed, and a tire because "you just always need an extra tire"... mostly $5 items.

A few weeks ago, we found an auction that listed a hay wagon for sale. This was an important item for us, so that we can transport the chicks and all of the supplies to the field. Brent and Abigail arrived as the auction started and were happy to find that the haywagon was in great condition. He had decided that his limit would be $500.

The bidding for the haywagon started at $450. Brent bid $475. The first bidder offered $500. Since it was in really good condition, Brent upped his offer and bid $525. First bidder quickly bids $550. Whew... too high for us. Although the auctioneer kept trying to get another bid for $575 or even $565, Brent declined and it sold to the first bidder. A bit disappointed, Brent and Abigail started to walk to the pickup.

Before they got to the parking lot, an auction employee stopped them. Apparently, the owner of the haywagon was the man bidding against Brent. In trying to run the price up, he had regrettable bought it back. He was hoping to get $700, but would now sell it to Brent for $550. Sort of ruins your faith in people! Brent offered $500 ($25 less than his last bid) and the man took it!

Here are Brent and Abigail with the new-to-us haywagon that they bought for the exact amount they wanted to pay!
I love it when things work out like that.

Oh, that's a weird thing for the seller to do, but at least you guys got it for your limit. Do I see hayrides in your future?

Treasures, treasures, treasures! Way to go Mr. Brent and Abigail. Glad they ended up getting a bargain, but too bad about the integrity of the seller, makes you wonder. Love you, T
